Who, in their early 40’s, has left their job and started working from home with a successful outcome?

I am in my early 40’s with an extensive background as an a/c and heating technician, over 20 years. This line of work has served me well, but it’s not a job that I can retire on,especially with two little kids. I am not tired of the work per se, just tired of the long hours in the various elements, during the peak of every season. I have come to a point where I must spend more time with my kids, other than just the typical kissing them good morning and then tucking them in at night. I am seriously considering working from home, but I am not sure what to do because, I need to earn money as soon as possible. So my question is who has experienced this similar situation, what did you do to make money and what was the outcome?
